Virtual Desktop Streamer: rehosting the platform layer on Linux
An author-reported Claude Code and REA workflow replaces the macOS streamer’s capture, encoding, audio and input layer with Linux implementations while reusing vendor protocol libraries. The documented result targets desktop streaming and video playback, not Windows-only VR game streaming.
Requirements and limitations
- Requires the official macOS Virtual Desktop installer for proprietary libraries and the user’s Virtual Desktop headset application. It is not a complete protocol reimplementation or an official vendor port.
- The build uses .NET 8. Linux runtime dependencies include GStreamer 1.16+, PulseAudio/PipeWire, X11 or an appropriate Wayland portal, OpenSSL 1.1 or 3 and uinput access; video-file playback additionally needs FFmpeg 7.
- Published testing used a simulated headset, mock portal and container networking. No real headset, real Wi-Fi or GPU encoder was available; internet matchmaking and same-address network changes were untested.
- The scroll fix was checked at device/libinput level without directly observing the receiving X11 app. This catalog did not repeat those tests or validate headset compatibility.
- MIT applies to this repository’s code only. Vendor libraries remain proprietary; the project limits redistribution of packages containing them and does not grant rights to the headset application.
