WordCraft: document workflow reconstruction and bounded DOCX compatibility

The authors describe WordCraft as a clean-room Rust implementation of familiar Microsoft Word workflows. It provides its own document model, layout engine and DOCX reader/writer, with desktop and browser interfaces; source tests exercise selected editing and file-preservation behavior.

Requirements and limitations

  • The pinned workspace identifies version 0.7.0 and declares Rust 1.95+ with Cargo. The documented browser build uses Trunk; native builds and faithful layout require the relevant platform dependencies and fonts. The catalog did not build the app or download reference documents.
  • The outcome is a document-engine and interaction implementation, not recovery of Microsoft’s source tree or Microsoft 365’s hosted backend. CLI/MCP and control-channel support are automation surfaces, not evidence that REA was used.
  • The reviewed DOCX tests use constructed documents and specification-based XML fixtures to check modeled properties and passthrough parts. They do not establish arbitrary-document byte identity or Word-equivalent pagination. The dated assessment against Word for Mac 16.113.4 explicitly says real-world side-by-side file/page comparisons were not performed in that assessment pass.
  • The project is alpha. File fidelity, page layout, advanced typography, stability and ecosystem compatibility remain limited; ribbon-command counts and author readiness estimates are not acceptance-test pass rates. No original-versus-rebuilt application test was rerun here.
  • Code is MIT OR Apache-2.0 with NOTICE obligations; fonts and other assets retain separate rights, and ArtCraft branding has separate restricted terms. Clean-room is the authors’ characterization, not an independently established process or legal finding; no Microsoft code or assets are provided by this catalog.
