rec-rs: an OBS-informed Rust recorder for macOS
A macOS recorder is informed by OBS architecture research using REA package inspection, platform tools and public source references. It offers screen/camera recording and streaming with a deliberately smaller scene/source feature set; the research notes record unavailable native-analysis providers.
Requirements & limits
- Prerequisites: Universal releases target macOS 15+; building needs the documented Rust/macOS toolchain. Screen, microphone and camera capture depend on the relevant system permissions.
- Attribution: REA 6.4.0 plist/signature inspection succeeded, but native analyze/layout operations failed or were unavailable; notes also studied OBS source and used separate macOS inspection tools.
- Limits: No free scene-layout editor, transitions, application/multi-display capture or audio filters; output is 8-bit SDR and the webcam overlay is baked in. Region capture is CLI-only.
- Testing evidence: The README supplies self-test/soak tooling; YouTube HEVC streaming was checked only against a local server. Not run or reproduced for this catalog.
- License: Code is documented as MIT OR Apache-2.0; the author states that original OBS code/assets are not included.
