UU Remote on Linux: an unofficial protocol implementation
Implements an unofficial native Linux host for NetEase UU Remote, using protocol behavior the maintainer says was recovered from official-client traffic and shipped programs. The Rust implementation connects selected desktop, input and auxiliary-tool channels to Linux services; an additional Linux viewer remains experimental. The author attributes development to Claude and Codex, without establishing REA use.
Requirements and limitations
- Reviewed version 0.2.8 implements selected protocol formats and session behavior in native Rust with small C components, without Wine or bundled NetEase binaries. The additional Linux viewer is experimental. Cargo.toml declares GPL-3.0-or-later; dependencies and official clients/services retain separate terms. This is not recovered vendor source or a replacement cloud backend.
- The host needs Linux, stable Rust, a C toolchain, pkg-config, X11 development libraries and FFmpeg. GTK3 supports graphical login; the optional viewer also needs SDL2. Wayland/portal builds require additional libraries and authorized desktop access. Dependencies vary by feature; arbitrary Linux compatibility is not established.
- UU cloud services remain required; the host and experimental viewer interoperate with supported official clients and hosts. Account connections use the user’s own authorized account; experimental remote assistance requires an explicitly enabled host and recipient-provided connection details. The project is unaffiliated with NetEase, and no security audit or complete protocol equivalence is established.
- Public parsing and initialization code has synthetic checks for malformed inputs, capability replies and echo correlation. Local/virtual WebRTC peers test pending-desktop responses, independent tool connections and session isolation. These are implementation checks, not an independent official-client conformance corpus. This entry is source-reviewed; tests and device behavior were not independently run.
- The README reports real-machine GNOME/X11 use and selected GNOME Wayland checks; other desktop coverage is largely virtual-machine based. Its viewer acceptance matrix is explicitly partial, with different official-host coverage for clipboard, audio, codecs and keyboards. These remain author-reported observations, not generally applicable compatibility results.
- Wayland remains experimental, with single-screen and resolution/recovery limits. Multi-monitor switching is under development; HDR, privacy-screen mode, microphone forwarding and the Linux pre-login screen are unsupported. Restrictive-network relay behavior is not thoroughly tested. Cloud behavior and supported versions may change independently of this snapshot.
