PCSX-Redux

PlayStation 1 emulator forked from PCSX and built around development and reverse engineering, with an interpreter and dynamic recompiler, software and OpenGL renderers, a MIPS debugger, VRAM viewer, SPU and GPU debugging tools, and a built-in GDB server that its documentation connects to gdb, IDA Pro and Ghidra's debugger. A LuaJIT API exposes breakpoints, memory and registers, an assembler and an ISO builder, and an optional REST web server can dump RAM and VRAM. The repository also holds the OpenBIOS replacement BIOS, PS-EXE conversion and packing tools, a Psy-Q object-file converter, Ghidra scripts for exchanging symbols and overlays with the emulator, and PS1 hardware designs.

Requirements and limitations

  • No tagged GitHub releases at review: the README links rolling development builds for Windows x64 (GUI and CLI), Linux x64 and arm64 AppImages and macOS Arm, and says the codebase is still experimental and has not reached its first stable release. Builds are 64-bit only and need a GPU and driver that can create at least an OpenGL 3.0 context; the macOS build is unsigned. The reviewed main commit is from 2026-10-19.
  • Source builds need a recursive clone: Visual Studio 2022 with NuGet on Windows; Docker for the AppImage, or make with clang and packages such as Capstone, FFmpeg, libuv, SDL3 and curl, on Linux; macOS Catalina or later with Xcode and Homebrew packages. OpenBIOS and other PS1 code need a mipsel-none-elf GCC toolchain, for which the repository provides install scripts.
  • Game discs and executables come from the user. The README presents OpenBIOS, built separately, as an alternative to the copyrighted retail BIOS, and the reviewed trees contain no retail BIOS, Psy-Q libraries or game files. The docs say most CPU debugging features need the dynarec disabled and the debugger enabled, and Ghidra debugging needs gdb-multiarch and Ghidra 10.3+. When enabled, the web server listens on port 8080 on all network interfaces by default, which the docs note makes it reachable from other machines.
  • GPL-2.0 for PCSX-Redux; OpenBIOS lives in the MIT-licensed nugget submodule, and LICENSES.md lists third-party libraries with their own licenses, some vendored with modifications. Hardware designs and wiki research were not reviewed. No emulator, game or debugging session was run, and the reviewed sources establish no REA connection or use by a specific decompilation project.
