N64: Recompiled

Statically recompiles N64 MIPS binaries into C functions from symbol metadata, emitting function lookups and relocation macros so a runtime can handle statically linked and relocatable overlays. The output needs a runtime such as N64ModernRuntime; the repository also includes RSP microcode and mod tooling.

Requirements and limitations

  • The README documents an ELF as the metadata source, most easily produced from an existing disassembly or decompilation; the reviewed source also accepts a symbols file plus ROM, which the README does not yet describe. A TOML file sets inputs, stubs, skips and instruction patches; full option documentation is not available.
  • Build N64Recomp from a recursive clone with CMake 3.20+ and a C++20 compiler. The only GitHub release (2025-05-04) packages the separate Recomp Mod Tool, not the recompiler. Last commit at review: 2026-05-27.
  • Testing has mostly covered old MIPS compilers (GCC 2.7.2, IDO) and modern clang; modern MIPS GCC output may need specific flags, and relocation support for TLB-mapped code is still planned.
  • MIT-licensed tool; submodules keep their own licenses. It ships no game code or assets. Downstream recompilations such as Zelda 64: Recompiled are separate projects, and no game compatibility is implied.
