OpenBaud
Rust MCP server and Codex plugin that gives coding agents audited access to local serial devices, from identifying ports by USB metadata and sending framed requests to recording every received and transmitted byte in lossless .obcap captures. Device behaviour confirmed during exploration is kept as YAML device profiles, typed commands and workflows that validate checksums and decode scalars, bit fields and record arrays, and the same commands can be replayed against a capture without hardware. Its worked demo decodes OBP/1, a small binary protocol the author wrote for an ESP32-S3 test board, not an existing vendor protocol.

Requirements & limits
- A young project: the repository was created on 2026-08-23 and had 48 commits at the reviewed v0.3.0 release commit of 2026-10-09. Cargo.toml declares version 0.3.0 and rust-toolchain.toml pins Rust 1.96.0. The README and plugin guide document installation only for Codex, through codex plugin marketplace add with the stable branch or a release archive; the server itself runs as openbaud mcp over stdio, and no other MCP client is documented.
- The v0.3.0 release provides plugin archives for macOS ARM64 and Intel, Linux x64 and ARM64, Windows x64 and a universal bundle, each with a SHA-256 file. The Node launcher needs Node.js 18+, and macOS binaries are ad-hoc signed but not notarized. A source checkout commits only the project's own macOS ARM64 runtime build, plugins/openbaud/bin/darwin-arm64/openbaud with a SHA-256 sidecar; other hosts build their runtime with plugins/openbaud/scripts/build-runtime and a Rust toolchain.
- Requires the user's own serial or USB-serial hardware. MCP tools cover listing and opening ports, raw read, send and request, running stored commands and workflows, captures, frame diagnosis and session statistics. Raw writes and device commands are marked potentially destructive, writes go to an append-only audit log, commands declared risk: danger need explicit acknowledgement, and commands with requires preconditions are refused until the session has established that device state. The README warns that serial writes can reconfigure or actuate hardware and advises starting unknown devices read-only.
- The example workspace holds a real OBP/1 request/response capture recorded from the author's ESP32-S3 board on 2026-08-24, whose radar points are generated by test firmware and flagged simulated_scene on the wire, and further captures whose notes describe a serial protocol tester sweep of AT, ELM327 OBD-II, Marlin, GPS NMEA and particulate-sensor framings. The reviewed tree contains no firmware, including that test firmware, and the media/pv directory the README cites for the demo video source is absent at this commit. CI runs Clippy, package validation, tests, native builds and MCP smoke tests on the five supported hosts; this review ran none of them and connected no hardware.
- MIT (LICENSE, Cargo.toml). The bundled skill tells agents to use OpenBaud's tools instead of ad-hoc shell serial access and to record verified behaviour as reusable commands; these are the project's own workflow rules. The reviewed sources establish no REA connection.
