Integration
mcp-windbg
Independent, community-built MCP server that runs Microsoft's cdb.exe and kd.exe headless, so agents can open and triage user-mode and kernel crash dumps, attach to cdb remote debug servers and KD kernel targets, and run arbitrary debugger commands in separately addressed sessions. Its README points users who want AI inside WinDbg to Microsoft's official WinDbg MCP and positions this project as an alternative for other MCP clients, remote HTTP use and batch dump triage; it calls itself a wrapper that runs real debugger commands, not an automatic fix.
Requirements and limitations
- Windows with Debugging Tools for Windows or WinDbg from the Microsoft Store, which provide cdb.exe and kd.exe. Install from PyPI (mcp-windbg 1.5.1, Python 3.10+), through the uvx-based Claude Code plugin, or as the signed standalone mcp-windbg.exe attached to each release with SHA256SUMS; optional plugins add four skills and a crash-analyst agent. The reviewed develop commit is one commit after v1.5.1 (2026-10-10).
- Symbols come from _NT_SYMBOL_PATH or --symbols-path, typically the Microsoft symbol server. Remote user-mode debugging needs a running cdb or WinDbg debug server; kernel sessions need a KD-enabled machine or VM reached over KDNET, a named pipe or serial, and closing a kernel session resumes the target.
- stdio is the default transport. The streamable HTTP transport binds 127.0.0.1:8000 by default and has no authentication: anyone who can reach the port can drive cdb.exe on the host, so the docs advise a trusted network, an SSH tunnel or an authenticating proxy. A --filter-script hook can redact data from tool arguments and output before they leave the machine.
- MIT. Microsoft's official WinDbg MCP, which the README dates from WinDbg 1.2610.1001.0, is a separate product not covered by this entry. No dumps, live targets or kernel sessions were analyzed, and the reviewed sources establish no REA connection.
