JPEXS Free Flash Decompiler (FFDec)

Java desktop decompiler and editor for Adobe Flash SWF files. It decompiles ActionScript 1/2 and AS3 side by side with the P-code they came from, edits scripts as source (experimental) or through the assembler view, and exports or replaces images, shapes, sounds, video, fonts and texts, with SWF-to-FLA conversion, SWF-to-XML round trips and SVG or HTML5 Canvas output. It also opens SWC and ABC files, Scaleform GFx and 64-bit Iggy files, has an ActionScript debugger and deobfuscation passes for obfuscated AS3, and offers its parser and decompiler as the ffdec_lib Java library and a command line.

Requirements and limitations

  • Latest stable release at review: 26.3.0, published 2026-09-14, with a Windows MSI, a Debian package, a macOS app and pkg, a cross-platform ZIP and separate ffdec_lib and Javadoc archives; nightly prereleases are built from the dev branch. The reviewed master commit is two commits after the version26.3.0 tag, a Chinese README update and a dependency bump.
  • The application needs Java 8 or later on Windows, Linux or macOS; the installation guide asks for Oracle JDK 8+ on macOS. build.properties targets Java 8, and source builds use Apache Ant or the bundled NetBeans project, with Git recommended so the build can embed the revision. The Dockerfile runs the command-line interface on an Eclipse Temurin 21 JRE, and CI runs the Ant checkstyle, build and test targets on Windows.
  • SWF, SWC, GFx and Iggy inputs come from the user. Video display and export rely on the vlcj and JNA libraries, debugging needs a debug Flash Player, either the standalone player launched from FFDec or a remote player in listening mode, and AS3 editing through the Flex SDK is marked unstable.
  • The application is GPL-3.0-or-later and the ffdec_lib library LGPL-3.0, with bundled third-party libraries under their own licenses. Decompiled scripts and extracted assets keep the rights of the SWF’s owners. The README directs bug reports to the tracker on free-decompiler.com rather than GitHub issues. No SWF files were opened or decompiled.
